Skin Cancer

Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States. Between 40 and 50 percent of Americans who live to age 65 will develop some sort of skin cancer at least once in their lifetime. The two most common forms are basal cell (BCC) and squamous cell (SCC) carcinomas. Both of these commonly occur on parts of the body excessively exposed to the sun, especially the face, ears, neck, scalp, shoulders, and back, but can also appear on areas not exposed to the sun. Melanoma is the most serious and most aggressive form of skin cancer. If not detected early, melanoma can advance and spread to lymph nodes or other parts of the body and become very difficult to treat. However, all skin cancers are nearly 100 percent curable if detected in a timely manner, so early recognition is key.

5 Warning Signs of BCC or SCC
  1. Any persistent, non–healing sore is a very common sign of an early skin cancer
  2. A Reddish Patch or irritated area, frequently occurring on the face, chest, shoulders, arms or legs.
  3. A pink growth with slightly elevated rolled borders and a crusted indentation in the center. As the growth slowly enlarges, tiny blood vessels may develop on the surface.
  4. An elevated growth with a central depression that occasionally bleeds.
  5. A wart-like growth that crusts and occasionally bleeds.
Warning signs of Melanoma: ABCD’s

Asymmetry: If you draw a line through this mole, the two halves will not match.
Borders: The borders of an early melanoma tend to be uneven. The edges may be scalloped or notched.
Color: Having a variety of colors is another warning signal. A number of different shades of brown, tan or black could appear. A melanoma may also become red or blue.
Diameter: Melanomas usually are larger in diameter than the size of the eraser on your pencil (1/4 inch or 6 mm), but they may sometimes be smaller when first detected.
Evolving: Any change in size, shape, color, elevation, or any new symptom such as bleeding, itching or crusting points to danger.

Treatment for Skin Cancer

Early detection and diagnosis is key in the treatment of skin cancers. All skin cancers can be easily treated when indentified in early stages. However, the larger the tumor has grown, the more extensive the treatment needed. Superficial cancers can be treated with liquid nitrogen or even topical creams, if found early. However deeper skin cancers can require more invasive means of treatment and involve different surgical procedures. It is important to remember that skin cancers are almost 100 percent curable if found early, so annual visits to a trained dermatologist are imperative to maintain ones health.
